Cloud Storage

Understand how files can be stored on remote servers and accessed using an internet connection.

1. Invitation

Your files do not always live on your device.

Photos, documents and music can be stored somewhere else, not just on your phone or laptop.

With cloud storage, the data is kept on remote servers and accessed through the internet.

💡 Remember: cloud storage means your data is stored remotely, not only on your own device.

2. Big Idea

Cloud storage uses remote servers.

Cloud storage is a service where data is stored on servers managed by another organisation.

You normally need an internet connection to upload, download or open the files.

💡 Cloud storage = remote servers + internet access.

3. FutureLogic Bridge

Think of renting a storage unit.

You do not keep everything in your house. Some items can be kept in a rented storage unit.

The company maintains the building. You use the space when you need it, but you depend on being able to access it.

💡 Bridge: cloud storage is like renting managed storage space for your files.

4. Worked Example

Accessing a file from another device.

A student saves a document to cloud storage on a laptop.

Later, they open the same document on a tablet using an internet connection.

5. Advantages

Cloud storage can be convenient.

Cloud storage can let users access files from different devices with an internet connection.

It can also reduce the need to buy or maintain large storage devices.

💡 Key benefit: files can be accessed from different devices using the internet.

6. Disadvantages

Cloud storage depends on connection and trust.

If the internet connection is lost, the files may not be available.

Data is also stored by a third party, so privacy, security and ongoing cost can become concerns.

⚠️ Remember: cloud storage is useful, but it depends on the internet and the provider.

7. Exam Tip

Be precise about access.

Do not just write that cloud storage lets users access data “anywhere”.

A stronger answer is that data can be accessed from any suitable device with an internet connection.

🎯 Exam Tip: write “from any device with an internet connection” rather than just “anywhere”.

8. Common Mistake

Do not repeat the definition as a benefit.

Saying “it uses the internet” explains what cloud storage is, but it is not enough as an advantage.

Explain why that matters: access from different devices, less local storage needed, easy to increase capacity.

⚠️ Common Mistake: definition is not the same as an advantage.

9. Summary

Cloud storage in one screen.

Cloud storage stores data on remote servers managed by a third party.

It can make files available from different devices using the internet, but it relies on internet access and the cloud provider.

💡 Key idea: cloud storage is remote storage accessed through the internet.
