Types of Software

Understand the difference between system software, application software, and common software licences without getting lost in detail.

1. Invitation

Hardware needs instructions.

Hardware is the physical part of a computer, but it cannot do much on its own.

Software is the set of instructions that tells hardware what to do.

πŸ’‘ Remember: software is not something you can touch. It is instructions that make the computer useful.

2. Big Idea

There are two main software jobs.

System software helps the computer run and manages the hardware.

Application software helps the user complete a task, such as writing, browsing, editing or playing.

πŸ’‘ Key idea: system software runs the computer. Application software helps the user do tasks.

3. FutureLogic Bridge

Think of hotel staff and hotel guests.

Hotel staff keep the hotel running behind the scenes. That is like system software.

Hotel guests use the hotel to do what they want. That is like application software.

πŸ’‘ Bridge: staff keep things working; guests use what has been provided.

4. Worked Example

Classifying software.

An operating system manages the computer, so it is system software.

A word processor lets the user write documents, so it is application software.

5. Utility and Firmware

Some system software has special jobs.

Utility software performs maintenance tasks, such as anti-virus, backup or file compression.

Firmware is software stored in ROM that helps start or control hardware.

πŸ’‘ Light touch: utilities maintain the system; firmware helps hardware start and work.

6. Software Licences

Free does not always mean the same thing.

Freeware is available at no cost, but the source code is not provided and the user cannot modify it.

Free software gives access to the source code and can be modified. It may or may not cost money.

Shareware is usually a trial version with limited time or limited features.

🎯 Exam Tip: freeware cannot be modified. Free software can be modified.

7. Exam Tip

Do not use brand names.

In exams, use the type of software, not a brand name.

For example, write word processor, spreadsheet or web browser.

🎯 Exam Tip: brand names are not accepted. Use the software category.

8. Common Mistake

Freeware and free software are often reversed.

The word β€œfree” can mislead students.

Freeware is free to use, but not free to edit. Free software can be edited because the source code is available.

⚠️ Common Mistake:

Student answer: β€œFreeware can be modified.”

❌ This is the wrong way round.

Better answer: Freeware is available at no cost, but cannot be modified because the source code is not provided.

9. Summary

Types of software in one screen.

Software is a set of instructions that tells hardware what to do.

System software manages the computer. Application software helps the user perform tasks.

Freeware, free software and shareware are different software licence types.

πŸ’‘ Key idea: know the job of the software before choosing its type.
