What do I need to know before I start?

An embedded system is a computer built into a larger device to perform one dedicated function — like a washing machine, traffic light or smart thermostat. It uses a microprocessor rather than a full CPU, and its hardware and software are fixed for that one job. The exam contrasts embedded systems with general-purpose computers (PCs, laptops, phones) and links them to the Internet of Things (IoT). The key skill is explaining why a device is embedded, not just listing what it does.

Cambridge-approved terms

Embedded system

A computer system designed to perform a dedicated/specific function within a larger device. Hardware and software are fixed.

General-purpose computer

A computer that can perform a wide variety of tasks; the user can install and run different software.

Microprocessor

An integrated circuit that performs many CPU functions on a smaller scale, processing a limited instruction set for a specific task.

Dedicated hardware

Components included only for the device's single function — a defining feature of an embedded system.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The connection of everyday devices over the internet so they can exchange data. Many IoT devices contain embedded systems.

Instruction set

The commands a processor can run. Embedded: limited. General purpose: thousands of complex instructions.

The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is the connection of everyday devices using the internet to allow data to be exchanged. Many IoT devices (smart fridges, thermostats, fitness trackers) contain embedded systems that collect and send data automatically.

Traps that cost marks every session

❌ Listing the device's features

Mar 2025 mark scheme: to identify a device as embedded, explain why — dedicated function, dedicated hardware, not general purpose, uses a microprocessor.

❌ "Embedded systems have a full CPU"

They use a microprocessor, not a full CPU. That's a key distinguishing feature.

❌ "Embedded = small"

It's about a dedicated function, not physical size. A car's engine management system is embedded but not tiny.

❌ "You can install apps on it"

Embedded software is fixed/limited. Being able to install any software is a general-purpose trait.

❌ IoT = the internet

IoT is specifically everyday devices connected to exchange data — many containing embedded systems.

❌ Wrong examples

A laptop or smartphone is general purpose. Embedded examples: washing machine, ATM, traffic light, alarm clock.

Microprocessor vs CPU

A microprocessor is an integrated circuit that performs many functions of a CPU but on a smaller scale. It processes a limited set of instructions for a specific task. A full CPU can process thousands of complex instructions for many different tasks.

Internet of Things (IoT)

Definition

The Internet of Things is the connection of everyday devices using the internet to allow data to be exchanged. Many IoT devices contain embedded systems.
